US Open 2026: Brits Neal Skupski, Alfie Hewett clinch respective doubles, wheelchair titles at Flushing Meadows | Tennis News
There was double success for Britain at the US Open on Saturday with Alfie Hewett regaining his wheelchair singles title and Neal Skupski finally winning the men’s doubles.
Emotional Hewett burst into tears after beating Tokito Oda 6-0 7-6 (7-5) to deny the 20-year-old Japanese star a calendar Grand Slam.
The 28-year-old, who was beaten by Oda in the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon this year, said: “It’s taken lot of hard work, a lot of soul-searching at times, a lot of reflecting.
“The Wimbledon pumping was a tough one to swallow. I definitely came away from that one with a lot of regret, took some time off and had a hard, long look in the mirror about who I wanted to be on the tennis court and how I wanted to show up.
“Today I didn’t care about the outcome. It was about being a little bit more like ‘Alfie’ and showing the fight and showing the grit and the desire to go out and play a bit more fearless. I think the performance showed that.”
It was Hewett’s fifth US Open title but his first since 2023, and will sit nicely with the doubles trophy he won with Gordon Reid on Friday.
GB’s Skupski wins doubles title
Skupski and American Christian Harrison beat German duo Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 6-4 7-6 (8-6).
Skupski had twice been runner-up at Flushing Meadows, alongside Wesley Koolhof in 2022 and Britain’s Joe Salisbury last year.
Jamie Murray and his American partner Bruno Soares presented the trophies on the 10th anniversary of their win here.
Skupski, 36, said: “I’m still in shock. Losing twice and having match points last year was a tough part of my career, but it’s amazing what a year does in tennis.
“This moment feels so special.”
Harrison and Skupski were competing in just their second tournament together when they won the Australian Open in January. By also claiming Wimbledon, they became the fourth men’s doubles team since Melbourne switched to hard courts in 1988 to win both majors in the same year.
“It’s been a great year,” Harrison said. “To get two titles like this, I’m speechless – and to do it at home.”
