Tyson Fury returns to the ring against Mariusz Wach in Thailand on Friday, but fans hoping to gauge the Gypsy King’s condition ahead of his proposed November showdown with Anthony Joshua are out of luck because the fight will not be broadcast.

Here’s why it won’t be shown live, why it’s taking place in Thailand, why Wach was selected as Fury’s opponent, and what happens next if the unthinkable happens…

Why is Fury fighting?

Quite simply because he wants to and needs to before finally stepping into the ring to face Joshua.

As things stand, were the AJ fight to take place in November as it is currently being proposed, Fury will have fought once, yes once, in the preceding two years.

Fury was last seen in the ring in April when he beat Arslanbek Makhmudov via unanimous decision, but you have to go back to December 2024 for his previous appearance, when a second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk forced him into “retirement”.

From a preparation perspective, the last two years have been anything but ideal for Fury ahead of a career-defining fight against Joshua.

The long and the short of it is that a tune-up fight is needed to ensure he arrives at the AJ showdown in optimal condition.

“He wants another fight,” promoter Frank Warren said. “He doesn’t want to be waiting, otherwise he’ll be out of the ring for nearly eight months again and he doesn’t want that. He wants to keep busy.”

What time is the fight?

Fury says he will fight at around 10pm local time (4pm UK) on Friday and will, unusually, be the first fight on the card.

“It’s exciting to box in Thailand. I’m the first one to have done that,” said Fury.

“To box in a small old show, a 1,500-seater stadium. That’s definitely a first. It’s going to be like the atmosphere of a kickboxer movie. I have never opened a show in my career.”

Why isn’t the fight on TV?

Ever since launching himself into the boxing stratosphere with his 2015 victory over Wladimir Klitschko, every fight involving Fury has attracted global interest.

This bout against Wach, with the significance that has been placed on it, is no different, but fight fans will not be able to watch it live.

Promoters Eddie Hearn and Warren have made it abundantly clear that a defeat for either Fury or Joshua in their warm-up bouts would put paid to their fight.

That has left Fury in a difficult position, wanting to sharpen up for AJ without risking the fight itself against a dangerous warm-up opponent.

Wach represents the safest bet when it comes to meeting all of those requirements, but that comes at a cost, with the concession the fight may not appeal to wider television audiences.

Will any footage be made available?

While you won’t be able to watch it live, footage of the Wach fight is expected to feature in the third season of Fury’s fly-on-the-wall Netflix series, At Home with the Furys.

With no live broadcast revenue on offer, Fury is set to receive a smaller purse than those he has become accustomed to during his reign at the top of the heavyweight division.

However, he is expected to recoup some of that shortfall through his lucrative Netflix deal, with footage from the fight likely to form part of the series.

And with a huge payday against AJ potentially on the horizon, it is a short-term sacrifice that Fury appears relaxed about making.

Why Thailand?

Fury has been training for the AJ showdown in Thailand, where the country’s hospitable culture has allowed one of world sport’s biggest stars to go about his business with a relatively low profile.

Fury wants to give back to a community that has taken him in, not only by hosting the Wach fight at Max Muay Thai Stadium in Pattaya, but also by donating ticket profits from the event to local charities. He will also be presented with the inaugural WBC Humanitarian title on fight night.

Remaining in Thailand also makes logistical sense. Travel demands are virtually non-existent, with no long-haul flights required to promote or take part in the fight. Instead, all business is conducted from his training camp, where Fury remains in complete control of his environment.

In a sense, the behind-closed-doors bout represents a glorified sparring session, with the jeopardy dialled up given the ramifications a defeat would have for his AJ plans. But it remains the lowest-risk option and will form part of his wider long-term preparation for Joshua.

Why Mariusz Wach?

Wach is a credible and durable opponent who should provide exactly the kind of test Fury is looking for, without significantly jeopardising a potential showdown with Joshua.

The Pole’s 52-fight record of 39-13 (20 KOs) includes defeats to Tyson Fury’s cousin Hughie Fury, fellow British heavyweights Dillian Whyte and Frazer Clarke, and a points loss to then-unified heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2012.

The 46-year-old enters the contest having lost three of his last four fights, including a second-round TKO defeat to rising British heavyweight Moses Itauma in July 2024.

Fighting Wach may lack the glamour and excitement of a main-event bout, but it ticks many boxes for Fury given the greater challenge ahead which does.

What happens if Fury loses?

Well, that changes everything.

A defeat for Fury against Wach would cast serious doubt over the biggest fight in British boxing history.

Beyond the immediate damage to his credibility, losing to a 46-year-old opponent would raise major questions about Fury’s readiness to face Joshua. Negotiations could be paused, financial valuations of the mega-fight could be dented and, crucially, the risk of the fight not happening at all would be heightened.

That is precisely why Fury has opted for a low-risk return. The objective is to gain valuable rounds against Wach, sharpen his timing and maintain momentum, while minimising the chances of an upset derailing a long-awaited showdown with AJ.
