Ridley Scott’s return to the sci-fi genre this year wasn’t exactly met with widespread acclaim from critics, and fans aren’t showing up to the box office to watch The Dog Stars, either. The film came into theaters carrying a $70 million budget, leaving it with an estimated break-even point of around $150 million, but it barely earned a fifth of this after a few weeks — it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest bombs of Scott’s career. He will seek box office redemption once again with his next film, which will be a remake of Treasure Island starring Hugh Jackman and (hopefully) Owen Cooper and Hugh Grant. However, Scott did admit while he was on the press tour for The Dog Stars that he was returning to the Alienfranchise for a new movie centered around Michael Fassbender’s David.
Scott last directed Alien: Covenant in 2017 before he stepped back into a producing role on recent Alien projects like Alien: Romulus and Alien: Earth. The latter project, which aired late in the summer of 2025, also marked the first time that the Alien franchise told a story through the lens of a TV show. Under the watchful eye of creator and showrunner Noah Hawley (Fargo), Alien: Earth was a massive hit, and the show was picked up for a second season. FX just announced last week that production was officially underway on the second season of Alien: Earth, which should allow for the show to return before the end of 2027. Fans are also rushing to rewatch the first season, which has led it back into the Hulu and Disney Plus streaming top 10 in a handful of countries around the world.

What Is ‘Alien: Earth’ About?
The official synopsis for the first season of Alien: Earth, which holds scores of 94% from critics and 65% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows: “In the year 2120, the Earth is governed by five corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold. Cyborgs and synthetics exist alongside humans, but the game is changed when the Prodigy Corporation unlocks hybrids. The first hybrid prototype named Wendy marks a new dawn in the race for immortality. After Weyland-Yutani’s spaceship collides into Prodigy City, Wendy and the other hybrids encounter mysterious life forms, which are more terrifying than anyone could have ever imagined.” There will also be a Game of Thrones reunion in the second season of Alien: Earth, with Tyrion Lannister actor Peter Dinklage and Bronn actor Jerome Flynn both being enlisted for key roles.
