Not only did Zach Cregger‘s critically acclaimed Resident Evilreboot break the franchise’s opening-weekend box office record, but it also outgrossed the lifetime hauls of nearly every previous installment in a single weekend. The new Resident Evil is also the highest-rated installment of the long-running horror franchise by a significant margin, and is all but guaranteed to become the series’ top-grossing entry when the dust settles. The record currently stands at around $60 million domestically and around $310 million worldwide. Cregger is coming off two back-to-back horror hits, the original films Barbarian and Weapons, which grossed approximately $45 million and $270 million worldwide, respectively.
Even though both movies were “Certified Fresh” on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes with exceptionally high ratings — Weapons also won an Oscar — the new Resident Evil has them beat. It now holds a 95% score on the aggregator, making it one of the highest-rated horror films and video game adaptations of all time. The site’s consensus reads, “Packing unforgettable scares into a sleek runtime while Austin Abrams‘ crack comedic timing provides crucial levity, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is a propulsive tribute to the pleasure and terror of playing a truly spooky video game.” The movie also holds a “Verified Hot” 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, in addition to a B+ grade on CinemaScore, which should help its performance in the long run.

Here’s How Much the New Resident Evil Movie Grossed in Its Worldwide Box-Office Debut
In its opening weekend at the domestic box office, the new Resident Evil grossed around $60 million. Remarkably, the movie has already outgrossed the lifetime hauls of past installments such as Resident Evil ($40 million), Resident Evil: Retribution ($42 million), Resident Evil: Extinction ($50 million), Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ($26 million), and possibly even Resident Evil: Apocalypse ($51 million). The highest-grossing installment of the Milla Jovovich-led series remains Resident Evil: Afterlife, which grossed $60 million in its lifetime domestic run. Monday’s update will reveal if Cregger’s movie was able to overtake Afterlife as well. An earlier attempt to reboot the series was made with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which was released in 2021 to terrible reviews and poor box-office returns, grossing just $17 million domestically. Starring Abrams as a medical courier transporting precious cargo into Raccoon City, Cregger’s film made another $48 million in the international arena, which remains critically important for the franchise.
