Q. Michael Owen did it twice in English football; Romelu Lukaku, Yakubu and Andre Schurrle all did it once. Name anyone to do it in the Champions League.
A. This one’s a question in two parts, really. Michael Owen scored two Premier League hat-tricks against teams he would later join – with both trebles coming against Newcastle United. Romelu Lukaku scored a hat-trick for Everton against future employers, Manchester United; Yakubu scored three as a Portsmouth player against Middlesbrough before joining them; and Andre Schurrle scored three for Chelsea against Fulham, whom he later joined. So all you had to do was tell us one of the three players to have scored against a club they’d later sign for in the Champions League: you could have had Rivaldo for Barcelona against Milan in 2000, Roy Makaay for Deportivo La Coruna against Bayern Munich in 2002, or Sergei Semak for CSKA Moscow against Paris Saint-Germain in 2004.
