Break out the memes because Grand Theft Auto VI is finally here. Well, almost. Arguably the most-anticipated video game of all time, it’ll be released on ninth-generation video game consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S this November. Rockstar Games, the studio behind the lucrative franchise, will begin an elaborate promotional campaign as early as this week, with a special presentation planned for Netflix. The first trailer for GTA VI was unveiled after numerous delays and leaks a couple of years ago, followed by a new trailer in 2025. The franchise began in the 1990s and has since emerged as something of a cultural phenomenon, having sold nearly 500 million units in total. But fans have been left hanging since the previous installment, Grand Theft Auto V, which was released in 2013 to exceptionally positive reviews.
GTA VI continues the sprawling open-world format used in previous installments and in other Rockstar titles, such as Red Dead Redemption and its sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2. The protagonists of GTA VI are a criminal couple who wreak havoc in the game’s stand-in for Florida. Having already created “events” with boxing matches and comedy festivals, Netflix is hoping to attract a different audience this week with its GTA VI event.
