Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has described the conduct of Argentina players after the World Cup final as “intolerable and unacceptable”.

FIFA launched an investigation after Argentina’s Leandro Paredes was shown a red card for violent conduct following the full-time whistle when he grabbed and pushed Spain players, including Eric Garcia and Gavi.

Nahuel Molina attempted to knock over Spain’s Rodri as the Manchester City midfielder celebrated winning the World Cup after Ferran Torres’ extra-time strike, while Argentina coach Roberto Ayala also attempted to punch Dani Olmo in the face, for which he has apologised.

“At the time, I didn’t realise it. I was celebrating, hugging team-mates,” De La Fuente told Spanish television.

“But in any case, it is intolerable, unacceptable, it cannot be allowed. Players of that stature, whom I praised in the days leading up to the match and continue to praise, who are great players with a tremendous coach, surely they must have felt just as bad as we did seeing those reactions.

“I want to highlight our behaviour in the face of that kind of aggression and provocation. Our players always kept their composure and behaved like true professionals.”

The Spain squad stood in a guard of honour for Argentina players walking to the podium to get their medals, but Lionel Scaloni’s squad turned their back on the trophy celebration.

A FIFA statement said: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents. Further details will be communicated by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee once the prosecutor’s report has been completed.”

Fernandez: Argentina played with ‘pride’ and ‘humility’

Enzo Fernandez appeared to dismiss Argentina’s behaviour during the final in which he was sent off.

In a message on Instagram, the Chelsea midfielder said: “As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result.

“For years, this group has represented us in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up.

“It has been a privilege to be part of a group that always stepped up, competed at the highest level, and defended these colours with pride, humility, and commitment.”
