Aaron Donald has officially come out of retirement and will return for the Los Angeles Rams this season.
The 35-year-old is coming back after two and a half years away from the game to form a defensive pairing with Myles Garrett that will alarm every offensive line in the NFL.
The Rams confirmed Donald’s decision on Sunday at the end of weeks of talks and almost two months of workouts at the club’s facility, where Donald tested whether his body could stand another season. He has signed a one-year contract, with ESPN reporting the deal is worth at least $20m and built heavily on incentives.
Donald walked away without warning in March 2024 after 10 seasons spent entirely with the franchise in St Louis and Los Angeles, a career that brought three Defensive Player of the Year awards, 10 Pro Bowl selections, eight All-Pro honours and a Super Bowl ring, and established him as one of the defining defensive players of his generation.
It was the Rams’ trade for Garrett this summer that set the comeback in motion. The former Cleveland Browns star has won two of the last three Defensive Player of the Year awards, meaning the new team-mates own five of the past nine between them.
They join a side already installed as favourites for a second Super Bowl under Sean McVay before Donald’s return was even confirmed.
Matthew Stafford, the reigning MVP, leads a Rams offence that ranked first in the league and returns every major contributor, while cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson have arrived from Kansas City to strengthen the other side of the ball.
Donald’s 111 career sacks remain a franchise record and the second-most in NFL history by a player operating primarily inside, where his ability to collapse pockets between the tackles drew constant double teams and created space for team-mates throughout his first decade.
Returning resets the clock on a Hall of Fame induction that had been due to become possible in 2029, a price Donald has accepted for the chance to chase a second ring alongside Garrett and a young supporting cast of Byron Young, Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske – starting with the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia next month.
