One of the most fun Batman television series over the years is, without a doubt, the lighthearted and cartoony Batman: The Brave and the Bold. So, it’s safe to say that, in 2010, when Batman: The Brave and the Bold — The Video Game released, people were pretty excited to see this show come to life in a whole new way.

Fans praised this game for pretty much the same reasons they praised the beloved television show: it’s fun, goofy, comic book-inspired, and all-around a total blast. This game introduced an open-world Gotham City, playable characters outside of the typical Batman cast, and became the very first LEGO game to bring full-fledged voice acting.

There’s no secret that a profound number of players and fans across the world have so much love for the Batman: Arkham Asylum franchise. While the main trilogy is easily the best in the series, there’s also a great prequel game titled Batman: Arkham Origins. With a new voice cast and a new studio developing the project—WB Games Montréal rather than Rocksteady Studios—people were initially unsure about the project.

However, it managed to quell people’s worries upon release, thanks to all of the work that WB Games Montréalgenuinely put into it. With Deathstroke (Mark Rolston) being introduced to the fold, people got more and more excited. At the end of the day, Batman: Arkham Origins was a prequel that enriched the original’s plot and a great addition to this universe.

‘LEGO Batman: The Video Game’ (2008)

The LEGO Batman franchise didn’t become such a beloved success because it had a mediocre start. This series kicked off in 2008 with an absolute hit. People look back on LEGO Batman: The Video Game with so much nostalgia and love, and for good reason. This game is what got a lot of people into the Lego games, and that already makes it an incredibly important game to this day.

This was also the first Lego game to not adapt a movie story, but create its own. Rather than taking the plot of the Batman movies that came before, a whole new narrative was written by Duncan Kinnaird, Phil Gray, and Dave Brown. This novel approach not only makes it unique, but it also allows players to be surprised at every turn. Not to mention, the humor is excellently executed and is the prime example of why many people prefer when LEGO games didn’t have voice actors.

‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ (2015)

When it was revealed that a finale to the Batman: Arkham Asylum series was coming, people were super nervous about how Rocksteady Studios was going to stick the landing, or if they even could. With the team introducing an all-new villain (or so they thought) in the Arkham Knight (Troy Baker), fans were sure they were going to be in for a ride with this one.

Batman: Arkham Knight gave players the new ability to pilot the Batmobile, which was very inventive and incredibly fun to play. While some people thought there was too much Batmobile, it really didn’t matter much on the grand scale of the game. The story of Batman: Arkham Knight is excellently executed, with it adapting not just the villain of Scarecrow (John Noble), but the Red Hood, as well. This project wound up being an incredible finale to this beloved franchise, and is remembered for how well it wrapped up everyone’s character arcs.

‘LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’ (2026)

2026’s LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight isn’t simply a new addition to the LEGO Batman video game universe, but the biggest love letter to Batman in recent years. The entire game is one gigantic homage to all of the Batman stories in cinema. Somehow, the team managed to weave together all of the iterations of Batman into one, and it works so well.

Just this year, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight released to huge success and praise. Not only does it push the boundaries of what a typical LEGO game can offer, but it also ends up being one of the best-looking superhero games of all time. Made in Unreal Engine, the software behind this project is powerful, making this new LEGO entry one of the best Batman games ever made.

‘Batman: The Telltale Series’ (2016)

Everyone who plays a Batman game can be assumed to want to be The Dark Knight in some way, shape, or form, and the one and only Batman: The Telltale Series does so in a way no other adaptation of The World’s Greatest Detective has before. With players getting to speak for the protagonist and make their own choices, this game is engrossing in a way that the Caped Crusader had never been before.

Batman: The Telltale Series really focuses on its storytelling and the detective side of the Batman character, bringing a similar appeal to Matt Reeves‘ critically acclaimed The Batman. Getting to jump into—to be the mind of—Batman makes this project something truly special, and people genuinely mourn Batman: The Telltale Series after the rocky history the company has had.

Every masterpiece has to begin somewhere, and Batman’s video game masterpiece franchise began in 2008 with Batman: Arkham Asylum. This title genuinely revolutionized superhero gaming and changed the way comic book characters could be brought to life in the medium.

The combat system specifically is something everyone marveled at. The way Rocksteady Studios brought the action to life in this 2009 hit was groundbreaking at the time. Players truly felt like the Bat with the combo system, different types of moves, and the stealth combat. It doesn’t end at the gameplay, though, because the storytelling is also just as masterful. With critically acclaimed Batman writer Paul Dini helming the script, and the legendary Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill bringing it to life, Batman: Arkham Asylum went down in history as something unforgettable.

Batman: Arkham City does everything that a good sequel needs to do: It takes everything that made its predecessor great, expands upon it, and adds new concepts, too. This 2012 game doesn’t just do that; it excels at it. With anything that Batman: Arkham Asylum could’ve done better, Batman: Arkham City steps up and says, “Watch this.”

The combat is upgraded, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are as awesome as they always are, the story is one of the best the character has been through in all media, and the amount of exploration available makes this sequel genuinely phenomenal. There’s a reason that, to this day, this second entry in the series remains known as one of the greatest superhero video games ever made.
