10 Greatest Pokémon of the Last 10 Years
In 1996, Pokémon Red and Green launched in Japan, with the updated Pokémon Blue following shortly after. These titles kicked off the largest multimedia franchise in the world, which soon went global with a long-running anime, multiple manga, a successful card game, and plenty of spin-off video games. 30 years later, Pokémon is still going strong, with the new games, Pokémon Wind and Waves, set to come out next year.
The last ten years have seen three generations come and go, and each one introduced a plethora of new Pokémon to the franchise. Plenty became fan favorites for one reason or another, including a flashy design, compelling lore, or competitive use. Here, we celebrate the best Pokémon introduced in the last decade. Given how varied opinions are on Pokémon, this list should be seen as just one perspective on a very broad discussion.
Incineroar – Pokédex Number 727: The Heel Pokémon
The adorable Fire Cat Pokémon, Litten, is the Fire-type starter of the Alola region. Its final form, Incineroar, becomes a bipedal Fire and Dark-type with a mean streak and a love for battle. They’re known to ignore their trainers if they’re not in the mood to listen, and seek out powerful foes to invigorate their fighting spirit.
Some fans were upset that the quadrupedal Litten evolved into a bipedal final form, but Incineroar quickly won over fans. Its wrestler-aesthetic gives it so much personality, and made Incineroar an obvious choice to appear in fighting games like Super Smash Bros. In the competitive scene, Incineroar has been recognized as perhaps the best competitive Pokémon thanks to its Intimidate ability and versatile move set, including Fake Out for flinching and Knock Off to remove opponents’ items.
Mimikyu – Pokédex Number 778: The Disguise Pokémon
Pikachu’s status as the franchise’s mascot has resulted in plenty of Pokémon who cash in on its appeal. None are more creative than Mimikyu, a Ghost and Fairy-type said to be so horrific to look upon that anyone who has seen it has died. Mimikyu is lonely and desperate for friends, so it constructs a disguise to make itself look like Pikachu and thus seem more approachable.
Between its adorable design and relatable backstory, it’s no wonder that Mimikyu won the hearts of so many. The anime also helped out by giving Jessie a Mimikyu partner during the Alola seasons, with the two forming a very strong bond by the end. In battle, Mimikyu’s typing gives it great offensive capabilities, while its Disguise ability guarantees it at least one round of battle by reducing the damage of the first attack that hits Mimikyu.
Kommo-o – Pokédex Number 784: The Scaly Pokémon
Alolah’s psudo-legendary Pokémon, Kommo-o, is a Dragon and Fighting-type who begins life as Jangmo-o, a little dragon obsessed with growing stronger. Once they fully evolve, Kommo-o can be found watching over Jangmo-o enclaves and searching for stronger opponents to challenge. In battle, Kommo-o attacks either with devastating uppercuts or by clanging its scales to make a deafening sound, though this does cost it defense as its scales fall off.
Pseudo-legendaries are always fan favorites, and Kommo-o is no exception. Though initially lackluster in the competitive scene, new moves and a unique Z-Move helped it find a unique niche as a defensive powerhouse. In terms of its design, Kommo-o has a lot of little details from different cultures, which feeds into its aesthetic of training to become the ultimate warrior.
Necrozma – Pokédex Number 800: The Prism Pokémon
Long ago, the people of Ultra Megalopolis attempted to steal the light of the cosmic Dragon and Psychic-type Necrozma, resulting in its body being shattered and its light fading. Now in maddening pain, Necrozma travels the multiverse, feeding on the light of different worlds, shrouding them in darkness until it is returned. It also has the ability to merge with two Pokémon who represent the sun and moon, Solgaleo and Lunala, adding their light to its own and allowing it to briefly transform back into its true form.
Necrozma easily ranks as one of the most powerful legendary Pokémon both in lore and in-game. Players were blindsided by the boss fight in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, where not only did Necrozma have a diverse move set that covered all of its weaknesses, but it also got an omni boost to all its stats, forcing players to strategize to take down the cosmic dragon. In lore, Necrozma is one of the franchise’s best depictions of cosmic horror—a being of light now transformed into a herald of darkness driven by rage.
Dragapult – Pokédex Number 887: The Stealth Pokémon
The Ghost and Dragon-type Dreepy might be the weakest Dragon-type Pokémon. However, should it make it to Level 50, it evolves into Drakloak and gains significantly improved combat potential, meaning it isn’t too much longer until it becomes a Dragapult. This pseudo-legendary Pokémon can be found leading flocks of Dreepy as it soars through the sky, and in battle, it launches Dreepy from its horns to use its signature Dragon Dart attack.
With 142 base Speed, very few Pokémon can hope to outspeed Dragapult, meaning it’s almost guaranteed to go first in a turn. It makes use of this initiative to hit opponents for at least neutral damage between its Dragon and Ghost attacks, or spread status conditions via Will-o-Wisp or Thunder Wave. It also has two fantastic abilities: Infiltrator allows Dragapult to damage enemies trying to hide behind Substitutes and barriers like Reflect and Light Screen, while Cursed Body has the chance to prevent an opponent from using a move that makes physical contact with Dragapult.
Zacian – Pokédex Number 888: The Warrior Pokémon
Long ago, when the Galar Region was beset by a calamity known as the Darkest Day, two wolf-Pokémon rose to aid human heroes in stopping it. The elder wolf, Zacian, is a Fairy-type and specializes in hyper offense. When given a Rustic Sword to hold, Zacian gains the Steel-type and transforms into its Crowned Sword form, where it wields the blade in its mouth to deliver devastating blows.
Zacian was the premier competitive Pokémon in Sword and Shield, and while it fell a bit from grace in the next generation, it’s still a monster. Fairy and Steel make for a powerful combination, providing plenty of resistance while hitting common types like Dragon, Fighting, and Fairy for super effective damage. Then there is its Intrepid Sword ability, which gives Zacian an attack boost the first time it enters battle, ensuring that its signature Behemoth Blade attack will hit like a truck.
Baxcalibur – Pokédex Number 998: The Ice Dragon Pokémon
Ice is one of the best types for dealing with Dragon Pokémon, but it’s also the secondary type of Frigibax, a little fella who can cool the surrounding air to keep its nest chilly. As it evolves, it gains better mastery over cold; its middle form, Arctibax, creates ice armor and weapons in the form of a face mask and ice spines on its dorsal fin. Finally, as Baxcalibur, it can freeze lava and make icy surfaces in an instant, which it uses to propel itself forward to impale foes with its Glaive Rush attack.
The newest of the pseudo-legendaries, Baxcalibur prioritizes bulk alongside its Physical Attack, allowing it to generally survive one hit before taking out its opponent. As of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, it also gains a Mega Evolution that makes it better in every way, and visually stands out by turning Baxcalibur’s dorsal fin into an ice sword. If that wasn’t enough, it looks pretty cool, with a design inspired by the real-life Spinosaurus and the fictional Godzilla.
Meowscarada – Pokédex Number 908: The Magician Pokémon
Fans quickly fell in love with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet‘s Grass-type starter, Sprigatito, and hoped that it would not evolve into a bipedal form as Litten did. Their hopes were sadly dashed when they saw its second form, Floragato, but its final form, Meowscarada, got a lot of praise. The Magician Pokémon is aptly named, as it uses light tricks to disguise the stem of its flower to make it appear as if it’s floating, allowing it to entertain its friends or confuse its enemies.
Meowscarada’s showman personality gives it a ton of character, which was further exemplified in the Pokémon Horizons anime, as it was the partner Pokémon of the main character, Liko. In battle, Meowscarada is a textbook glass cannon, with high Speed and Physical Attack, and a secondary Dark typing for more coverage and Psychic immunity. But where it really shines is its signature move, Flower Trick, which is a guaranteed critical hit, allowing Meowscarada to put out a lot of damage.
Flutter Mane – Pokédex Number 987: The Paradox Pokémon
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet introduced Paradox Pokémon, powerful versions of known Pokémon said to come either from the far future or the distant past. One of these past Paradox Pokémon is Flutter Mane, a Ghost and Fairy-type that bears a resemblance to the franchise’s first mono Ghost-type, Misdrevous. It’s unknown if it’s an ancestor of Misdreavus or not, but what is known is that Flutter Mane is quite aggressive when confronted.
Flutter Mane shares the same typing as Mimikyu, but it proved to be a far more devastating opponent in competitive battle. A major reason for its success is its ability Protosynthesis, which boosts its highest stat in intense sunlight. Not only does it turn Flutter Mane into a rail-gun blasting enemies with Shadow Balls and Moonblasts, but it grants it incredible versatility when it comes to team building.
Miraidon – Pokédex Number 1008: The Paradox Pokémon
The Dragon and Normal-type Cyclizar is a common sight in the Paldea region, and loves to transport people on its back. However, in the far future, or perhaps in an alternate timeline, Cyclizar transforms into Miraidon, a legendary Paradox Pokémon referred to as the “Iron Serpent.” Trading its Normal-type for Electric, Miraidon is hyper-aggressive and can expel enough lightning to turn the land to ash.
Miraidon dominated competitive battles thanks to a combination of incredible typing, high offensive stats, and its Hadron Engine ability, which sets up Electric Terrain, boosts Miraidon’s Special Attack even higher and ensures few things could survive its attacks. Its design is also striking, taking Cyclizar’s base and modifying it to look sleek and majestic by blending technological and organic components. Finally, it plays a major role in the story of Pokémon Violet, forming a bond with the player character and helping them traverse the Paldea Region.
