Wrexham news: Shock changes and vital results – the Red Dragons’ seismic week

In a 139-word statement issued by Mac and Reynolds announcing Williamson’s exit, the Hollywood pair wrote: “We remain focused on our most important task: to make the Wrexham community proud.”

The word community was twice used in the brief statement. Plenty have made their own interpretations of the words chosen.

The announcement undoubtedly came out of the blue, with many staff on the ground in Wrexham only being made aware of the news shortly before the club’s official announcement.

Parkinson himself was only informed on Friday morning prior to his pre-Wolves press conference, held at the club’s Colliers Park training ground in the afternoon.

It was perhaps telling that Williamson’s usual notes to fans were included in the Wolves matchday programme, despite his exit from the club a day earlier.

Only three days earlier, ahead of an impressive 2-0 victory against Middlesbrough, Williamson had utilised his programme notes to address the fiasco of Wrexham’s breaches of player eligibility rules, incidents that occurred prior to sporting director Nickson’s arrival.

“We co-operated with the EFL, carried out an internal review and have already taken steps to strengthen our processes and help prevent a recurrence,” he wrote.

“As Wrexham AFC grows, our operations and infrastructure must keep pace with our ambitions on the pitch.

“Growth brings responsibility. We are proud of the progress being made, but we must be open and accountable when we fall short of our own standards. That is how we learn and build a stronger club for the long term.”

Wrexham have operated in ruthless fashion since being taken over by Reynolds and Mac in February 2021.

Icons including Paul Mullin, Elliot Lee, Andy Cannon, James McClean, Steven Fletcher and Ollie Palmer have all been moved on during the club’s surge up the football pyramid.

Parkinson himself has been the recipient of some criticism during various stages of his five-and-a-half year tenure as boss.

The experienced manager rewarded the faith shown in him this week as his side collected four points in fixtures against two sides in Wolves and Boro that will likely be automatic promotion contenders come the latter stages of the campaign.

Williamson has not been as fortunate, and some of the reaction to his departure spoke volumes.

Former players Mullin, Lee, Cannon and Anthony Forde, along with Humphrey Ker – who recently stepped down as a director after five years with the club – were among those who liked a BBC Sport Wales post confirming Williamson’s exit.

When one fan commented that those likes “says it all”, former England midfielder Rob Lee – father of ex-Wrexham midfielder Elliot Lee – responded: “Yes it does.”
