Next on the rom-com adaptation slate for Prime Video is a particularly exciting addition to the genre for fans of the greatest sci-fi franchise in cinema history. Of course, we’re talking about The Love Hypothesis, Prime Video’s new adaptation of the New York Times bestselling romance novel by Ali Hazelwood. What some viewers may or may not know is that the novel originally began as Reylo (Rey/Kylo Ren) Star Wars fanfiction, much to the surprise and delight of many.
Tom Bateman (Based on a True Story), the real-life partner of Star Wars‘ Daisy Ridley, headlines the film alongside Lili Reinhart (Riverdale); the duo stars as Professor Adam Carlsen and PhD student Olive, who put love to the test through a fake relationship. Also starring the likes of Rachel Marsh and Nicholas Duvernay, this easy-viewing rom-com is sure to prove a big streaming hit heading into this weekend, although it’s unlikely to knock Alan Ritchson‘s Reacherand the new spin-off Neagley from the streaming summit. What Did Collider Say About ‘The Love Hypothesis’?
At a time when rom-coms on streaming seem more popular than ever, The Love Hypothesis will need to prove hugely impressive to stand out in the crowd. According to early reviews, this might just be the case. Collider’s Carly Lane, in her review of the adaptation, awarded The Love Hypothesis a strong 8/10 score. “Ultimately, The Love Hypothesis is a successful experiment led by Reinhart and Bateman, and another mostly solid addition to the rom-com genre,” she wrote, praising Reinhart for her “charming and hilarious” lead turn and Bateman for being “deceptively complex.”
