Over the past five years, Disney+ has produced a slew of live-action and animated series that have expanded the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One that stood out above the rest is She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, starring Tatiana Maslanyas the jade-skinned bastion of justice. While She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was met with a mixed response, or outright vitriol in some cases, it quickly received praise for Maslany’s performance and the way it captured the mix of humor and superheroics that makes She-Hulk a fan-favorite character. It’s even one of Disney+’s most popular series.
Yet for all its success, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law never quite nailed the dynamic of legal workwithin the MCU. The first half of the series features plenty of this, as Jennifer manages to balance her personal life and legal cases in a way that feels like a superhero twist on Ally McBeal. Yet the second half doesn’t quite recapture that, apart from an episode where Jennifer comes face to face with Daredevil (Charlie Cox). Anyone who wanted more of She-Hulk‘s legal scenes is in luck, as HBO is bringing a new superhero legal comedy to life with The People vs. Gorilla Grodd.
‘The People vs. Gorilla Grodd’ Is the Superhero Genre’s Take on the True Crime Craze

As its name suggests, The People vs. Gorilla Grodd will see the titular telepathic ape (Jimmy Tatro) put on trial for the alleged murder of his father, the king of Gorilla City. However, Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) reopens the case to see if Grodd is truly guilty. The series has been described by DC Studios co-chair James Gunnas being the DCU’s “first foray into true crime,” and it sounds like it’ll fully embrace the idea of crime in a world of superheroes that She-Hulk: Attorney at Law only scratched the surface of. Can Grodd truly be put on trial when he’s a citizen of another country? Is there a prison that can actually hold a mind-controlling, intelligent gorilla? The absurdity raises plenty of questions, but it also makes The People vs. Gorilla Grodd a must-watch.
The People vs. Gorilla Grodd will also feature recurring characters from Superman, with Gisondo joined by Wendell Pierce as the Daily Planet‘s editor-in-chief Perry White, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, and Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant. It’s the perfect angle for the series, since the Daily Planet often covers superhero battles and their fallout. DC fans have also expressed a desire to see more of the Daily Planet crew, particularly since they’re a large part of Clark Kent’s life. Jimmy, in particular, is often nicknamed “Superman’s Pal,” but The People vs. Gorilla Grodd will give him a chance to save the day without the Man of Steel’s help.

‘The People vs. Gorilla Grodd’ Could Bring Another Corner of the DC Universe to Life
The People vs. Gorilla Grodd isn’t the first time that Grodd has appeared in a DC Studios project, as he previously appeared in an episode of Creature Commandos. Fans of DC Comics also know that Grodd often serves as an enemy of the Flash, meaning that the Fastest Man Alive could potentially cameo or be referenced in The People vs. Gorilla Grodd. The latter is probably the safest bet, since James Gunn previously revealed that a new Flash project would take a while to get off the ground. “I wouldn’t say the next two years for either of those characters,” he said when asked about new versions of the Flash and Aquaman.
Whether the Flash shows up or not, The People vs. Gorilla Grodd is proof that DC Studios intends to create superhero stories that shake up the norm. Whether it’s the legal drama of The People vs. Gorilla Grodd or the sci-fi neo-noir of Lanterns, these projects feel unique. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was a glimpse into that, and Marvel Studios should continue to pursue those kinds of projects despite its upcoming television shake-up.
