Dowman, Madjo, Nyoni, Gabriel…Is the Wonderkid archetype set for a big role in the Premier League this season?
Even with no matches taking place, it’s been a busy summer in the Premier League. Over £2 billion has been spent on new players across the division with many of them integrated by their new teams in pre-season. This summer, however, has also been notable for the number of wonderkids that have broken through.
The Premier League could be set for a youth revolution if the summer friendlies are anything to go by. Pre-season performances don’t always translate into regular season consistency, but several teenagers have caught the eye this summer in a way that doesn’t feel like a flash in the pan.
Max Dowman is surely set for a more prominent role in Arsenal’s squad this season. Of course, the 16-year-old made his first team breakthrough at the Emirates Stadium last season, playing 153 league minutes as the Gunners won the title. That number will almost certainly be cranked higher this term.
Dowman didn’t feature in Arsenal’s Community Shield win over Manchester City, but he could be used regularly over the early weeks of the new season as some of the Gunners’ key figures are eased back into first team action after the World Cup. Dowman could deputise for Bukayo Saka.
Mikel Arteta is extremely bullish on Dowman’s potential, highlighting how Arsenal’s young players “bring something else.” At a time when Myles Lewis-Skelly’s future is up in the air, the Spaniard sees Hale End as a central part of Arsenal’s vision of the future. “We need to look after them in a special way and protect them,” said Arteta.
Ryan McAidoo is another youngster who could make a Premier League breakthrough this season. The young City winger could capitalise on the uncertainty at the club following the exit of Pep Guardiola to make himself a useful rotational option this season. The sale of Omar Marmoush and Savinho could open the door for McAidoo to receive significant game time.
Enzo Maresca’s focus on wing play could be good for McAidoo’s development. “We have been speaking with the club about Ryan and since day one he is that kind of winger I love,” said the new Manchester City manager. “Very aggressive one v one, always trying, making the right decision.”
Staying in Manchester, Shea Lacey might be set for a big season on the red side of the city. The 19-year-old is another winger whose performances in pre-season have raised the prospect of first team opportunities for Manchester United. Like McAidoo, Lacey is most dangerous in one-one-situations.
United’s focus on central midfield means Lacey could be pushed into the first team picture. Michael Carrick will need depth to compete on multiple fronts including the Champions League and Lacey is someone who appears to have the ability and maturity to make an impression at senior level.
JJ Gabriel is another Carrington youngster who is highly rated by Manchester United. Being only 15 years old, though, it might be unrealistic to expect Gabriel to be handed much of an opportunity in the Premier League this season. His pre-season debut gave supporters a taste of what’s to come.
Brian Madjo likely won’t have to wait as long for first team football. The teenage forward started the Super Cup for Aston Villa against Paris Saint-Germain, becoming the youngest scorer in the competition’s history. With speculation swirling around Ollie Watkins, it’s not impossible Madjo could be Villa’s first-choice centre forward this season.
Even if Madjo is a second-string striker, the signs are that he has a big future for club and country. Born in England, Madjo went to France at a young age to develop before joining Aston Villa from Metz for a reported fee of €12m in January. Aston Villa’s scouting of the forward is now producing fruit.
Trey Nyoni’s emergence for Liverpool has been a bright spot of pre-season for a club that is preparing for their first season under new manager Andoni Iraola. The teenager has been comfortable in Liverpool’s centre midfield unit, demonstrating ability on the ball and the willingness to progress possession forward.
Liverpool’s lack of depth could be good news for Nyoni. Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister will be Iraola’s first-choice double pivot pairing, but Curtis Jones’ exit to Inter Milan has left Iraola lacking much in the way of variety in the centre of the pitch. Nyoni has at least shown his potential.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Luca Williams-Barnett is another Premier League wonderkid who has impressed his manager over the summer. Indeed, Roberto De Zerbi has been glowing in his praise of the midfielder, calling him a “special player.” With so much in flux at Spurs, Williams-Barnett could be on the first team radar.
The 2026/27 Premier League season promises to be one of the most compelling in recent memory. The top end of the table looks to be wide open with no fewer than nine new managers taking charge for the start of the campaign. The emergence of several wonderkids could add even more sparkle.
