Antonio Silva to Bournemouth: Benfica and Portugal defender is Premier League ready and a good fit for Marco Rose | Football News

There was a time when Antonio Silva’s rise to the top appeared an inevitability. He was only 18 years old when he scored his first Champions League goal for Benfica in a 4-3 win over Juventus. He played at the 2022 World Cup for Portugal soon after that.

Since then, Silva has been linked with Europe’s biggest clubs but it is Bournemouth who look set to sign him after agreeing a deal with Benfica. In truth, excluded from Portugal’s squad this summer, his momentum has stalled. But, aged 22, there is time for this move to ignite his career.

Sure, there are grander destinations. But Bournemouth have emerged as one of the best recruiters of talent – proving themselves particularly adept at developing defenders. Silva is entitled to believe he can be the next to flourish for the Cherries.

Illia Zabarnyi and Dean Huijsen left for Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, respectively, just one year ago. Marcos Senesi has since moved to Tottenham. Silva is special enough to impress every bit as much as his predecessors on the south coast.

Speaking to Joao Nuno Fonseca, Silva’s coach during his days with Benfica’s development team, there is confidence that Bournemouth boss Marco Rose may have a gem in his hands. “Marco will not have any problems with him,” Fonseca tells Sky Sports.

“Antonio is a very good person and the type of player that is easy to coach. He is very attentive. At Benfica, he listened to every detail that we gave him. He was very mature and that had a huge impact because it is difficult to reach the first team at Benfica.”

Silva did that swiftly in part because of this mentality. “You give him feedback and he applies it directly in games. He understands everything.” It made for a precocious talent in his teenage years, boasting an appreciation of time and space that belied his years.

“The key aspect of his game is his anticipation. Antonio reads the game really well. He is an anticipation-based defender rather than a reactive one. You see a lot of reactive centre-backs. He is not one of those. Antonio understands what will happen next.”

Fonseca notes that the feet are good too. But it is the mind that saw Silva rise so quickly. “The technical skills are there, of course. But the key difference is understanding the game, in possession and out of possession. He knows what to do in those moments.”

He praises the timing of his tackles. “He is one of the best in this technical aspect.” And Silva’s statistics show a defender who is aggressive in winning interceptions and aerial duels. Important qualities given that Bournemouth will expect him to be proactive.

In possession, Silva has the confidence to play forwards rather than simply recycling possession. “He is a modern ball-playing centre-back, very comfortable receiving the ball on either foot.” There is variety to his use of the ball, chipped passes and more.

“One of the best things he has is the diagonal switches that he can do without looking,” says Fonseca. “He is very, very talented at that.” Expect that to be a significant feature at Bournemouth, who are looking to retain elements of Andoni Iraola’s vertical approach.

It is why Rose is regarded as the continuity candidate. Iraola is on record as an admirer of the former Borussia Dortmund coach who honed his ideas in the Red Bull school where looking forward and pressing high up the pitch are viewed as non-negotiables.

“I think it will work fantastically because of the way Antonio reads situations,” says Fonseca. “Marco will demand anticipation, a defender who looks for forward passes that break the lines and find those spaces in behind. Antonio will adapt very quickly.”

The Premier League will still be different. Even after four years at Benfica – perhaps especially after four years at Benfica – it will feel a step up. “This move is fantastic for him because he will evolve and mature much more as a player in the Premier League.”

Did he stay in Portugal too long? “He needed to move earlier, in my opinion,” concedes Fonseca. “He stayed longer than expected. The decision that he made not to leave Benfica last year did not help him because he needed exposure to new experiences.”

He explains: “We used to say at Benfica that while life starts at Benfica it does not end at Benfica. You need to move forward if you want to play on the world stage.” But a season with Jose Mourinho, an unbeaten league campaign no less, is hardly a waste.

And Fonseca does not place too much weight on the decision of Roberto Martinez to omit him from the World Cup squad in favour of his Benfica team-mate Tomas Araujo. “The decision of the Portugal head coach does not mean he is not capable,” he says.

“Antonio is very capable and is completely ready to play in the Premier League. But it will be a different challenge for him. The challenge in England is week by week, not just waiting for the European games like he could at Benfica. The focus must be there.”

Maybe there will be mistakes, lessons to learn even for a 22-year-old player who has already racked up an astonishing 181 appearances for Benfica in all competitions. “In the Premier League, the margin of error is very small. He needs to have that in mind.”

But the overriding feeling is that this is an opportunity for Silva – and will be a coup for Bournemouth. “Antonio is a very complete centre-back who would help any team in the world. At this moment, it is going to be Bournemouth.” A stepping stone to greatness?

“He has all the qualities to make the next move, but he cannot think like that. This move is the most important of his career. He will be in the Premier League. If he wants to move forward, he needs to focus completely and give 100 per cent for Bournemouth.”

That is perhaps the lesson of Silva’s journey so far. The hype came early. The next step is set to arrive later than expected. But at 22, there remains ample time for him to fulfil the promise that made him one of European football’s most coveted young defenders.

Bournemouth have shown repeatedly that they can provide the perfect environment for talented centre-backs to take that next leap. Antonio Silva is now poised to have the opportunity to prove that his journey to the top remains on course. It is simply set to take a different route.
